Introduction : Purulent pleurisy is a medical emergency requiring prompt
treatment.
Methods : This retrospective study reports on 13 patients treated with
thoracoscopic surgery for purulent pleurisy at the Principal Military Teaching
Hospital of Tunis.
Results : The majority were male, with a mean age of 49. Most patients presented
with fever, chest pain, and pleural effusion, confirmed by imaging. All underwent
thoracoscopy with drainage, debridement, and either total or partial decortication.
Postoperative recovery showed good lung re-expansion in most cases, though the
mortality rate was 30.8%.
Conclusion : Thoracoscopy proved to be an effective, less invasive alternative to
thoracotomy, offering reduced postoperative pain and complications.
