SAINT-THERES TEACHING HOSPITAL, ANNABA, ALGERIA.
Background : Allergic airway diseases are characterized by the presence of specific
IgE antibodies directed to the inhalant allergens. House dust mites (HDMs) are
among the most important allergens sources in the world. Although many different
species of HDM have been reported to occur in indoor environments,
Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus and Dermatophagoides farina are the primary
species associated with the development of D pteronyssinus IgE sensitization.
Objective : To determine sensitization to two house dust mites in allergic patients
living in Annaba (Algeria)
Patients and methods : A total of 232 adult patients accompanied in allergy
services were enrolled in this study. Quantitative specific IgE testing was done on
blood serum using a enzyme allergo-sorbent test (EUROIMMUN, Germany). Equal
or higher than class 1 was considered as positive (R+)
Results : Frequency of R+ to inhalant allergens was 62%.The frequency of R+ to
house dust mites were: D. pteronyssinus = 29%, D. farinae = 29% .
Conclusions : There was a predominant frequency of sensitization to house dust
mites in the evaluated patients. There is no difference of Sensitization between D.
farinae and D. pteronyssinus
